ReplyDeleteI agree that school should start later.
It is because when you are promoted to higher levels, your work load will increase. Therefore, you have to stay up later than usual.
If students have less sleep, they might wake up cranky. They might be distracted easily.

ReplyDeleteI think that school should start later. However, it should end at the same time. This is because many students wake up grouchy in the morning, hence, they cannot concentrate in class. However, the school dismissal time should stay the same. The rationale is that students may not have sufficient time to complete their homework.
I think that school should start later, as when school starts later, children do not have to wake up so early and as a result, they will be more alert, rather than school starting early, and in the end the students are all drowsy and sleepy and they fare badly in school, especially on examination days. Altogether, children who do not have enough sleep will not be able to concentrate well and be at their best alertness. I think that more schools should start later. But however, I think that when school starts later, school should end later too, otherwise they will end up having lesser school hours.

ReplyDeleteShould school start earlier? Well, in my opinion, I think that if it starts later, children will have more quality sleep. With enough rest, children can stay more alert and attentive in class. We should also end slightly earlier as nowadays our workload is heavier. With more time on our hands, we will then be able to have more time for our homework. However, we should not end too early as ending early would imply fewer school hours. Another advantage is that our parents will have more sleep and we will have more bonding time with our parents.
I think that school should not start later. This is because the dissimal times would be pushed. When the dissimal times are pushed back, pupils would miss their ususl lunchtimes and would be hungry, thus resulting in a loss of concentration. If they are taking public transport, they might miss the buss that they usally take and have to wait a long time for the next bus. Thefore, school should start at the same time.

ReplyDeleteI feel that school should start earlier as this lets the student learn to do things faster and if we start earlier and end at the same time, we can both learn more things and have enough time to complete our homework. There is a saying:'一日之计在于晨‘ It means that when we wake up, we can absorb most knowledge in the morning.

ReplyDeleteI feel that school should start later as if school starts early in the morning, pupils will wake up feeling tired and they will not be able to concentrate in class. Furthermore, some pupils may be given so much homework that they sleep late at night.

ReplyDeleteI feel that we should have more time to rest before going to school, that is, able to sleep longer. I also agree with Shane that we should also still end school at the same time.
Extra information:
Apparently,it is only the best for teens. Research has shown that teens' natural sleep cycle is to sleep later in the morning. They had tested it. A Minneapolis school district that has made the later start adjustment seems to be seeing the benefits. Kyla Wahlstrom, an educational researcher, found that students were less depressed, easier for their parents to deal with, and more attentive to their teachers with a later start time, according to NPR. She also reported that with a later start time, fewer students dropped out of school.
Also, later school start times might have one positive and unpredicted effect on teens: a lower car crash rate. A Kansas school district adjusted start times to be an hour later; a study of the teen car crash rates before and after the adjustment found a significant drop in the number of auto accidents for teens in that county.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I feel that school should start later. Nowadays, the homework load for schools is getting more and more. The students will be able to sleep longer and probably stay up later to finish up whatever homework they have left. Children will only grow healthily when they have longer periods of sleep. This does not affect the students only, teachers and parents are also affected too. Parents will not need to wake up that early, and can have more rest. Parents are the ones that stay up the latest, considering the fact that they have to do most of the housework. Would we choose to have students and teachers who are sleepy and cannot focus well? Or would we rather have students and teachers waking up later, but paying more attention in class? Ultimately, school starting later will have a positive impact on the students, parents as well as the teachers.
Gui Ming Jiang 5 Fai
ReplyDeleteI also agree that school should start later because more sleep will allow students to be more alert in school, and can absorb information more easily. However, I think that school should still end at the same time as firstly, lesser time is needed for lessons as students can absorb information more easily, and secondly, there will be enough time to complete pupils homework that is not completed at home.
Caleb Low of 5 Gen
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I feel that school should not start later. This is because if school starts later, school would end later. When school ends later, pupils would feel hungry during lesson time and that may result in loss of concentration. Furthermore, if school starts earlier and ends earlier, we would have more time to complete our homework, and also have extra time to play. For those who say school should start later as students will get more rest, why not just sleep later? Therefore, school should start at the same time, or even better, earlier.
Windsor Koh 5Faith:
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, school should start later. The main reason is of course, that students will get more rest time and go to school confidently, not sleepy, so the teachers and students get advantages. The teachers get advantages because they do not have to scold pupils for being unattentive and sleepy, and the students will get more information than if students were to wake up early, and get tired easily. But this leaves another question. Should the lessons end later?
I would think, yes. It would be better as the school hours are the same, so there would be same homework. Of course, this means that CCA lessons' hours ought to be reduced, ranging from maybe two hours to one and a half, so the end time would be the same. Students would not need to worry to be hungry, because having more time in the morning means students can eat breakfasts in their homes. If, of course, parents need to wake up very early to work for jobs, it does not make much difference. However, if the parents are not hurried to go to work, they can sleep more and eat their first meal of the day with their children, and it may as more interaction time, because some students(like me) have to eat in school because the school starts so early. If the school starts at maybe around 7.45 to 8.00, we can sleep more, and half an hour does not make much difference.
Another reason is transport. Many students nowadays have parents that work,so the students and their parents have to squeeze in a packed carriage, because it is a peak hour. If the schoolstarts later, the students would not have to squeeze with businessmen with briefcases. After the hustle and bustle, they can take a relatively emptier carriage to school. Joo Kai is right in some way, that there would be lesser buses. Which choice would you want? Buses that come very frequently, with people 'spilling out', or lesser but emptier buses? The latter, probably. There would be lesser cases of missing the bus, because they have more sleep hours, so they would not want to have an idea of sleeping more, so they should not be missing the buses, because buses do not come early, they come either on time or later. Furthermore, the period of opening school hours is still considered a peak, but with lesser people. So there would not be only one or two buses in half an hour, it would definitely be more. And even so, there would be school buses, and even they are late, students have an 'evidence', so if school buses come early, then lesser people would be late.
So I totally agree that school should start later.

THE CASE OF THE SLEEPY STUDENTS
Recently, certain students have been getting lower grades and the principal was highly alarmed. He quickly hired two detectives to solve the case. It was a well-paid job and they wasted no time to get to the crime scene: The classroom of 5 Fai and 5 Gen. Once there, they found some clues, An indent in the table, drool all over the place, stationery broken and some sheets of paper strewn on the floor. "Not again......" one of the detectives scowled. It meant another piece of home work undone by the students. A broken dustpan was also found. The detectives then set down to work after 5 long coffee breaks and some blog editing. They decided to interview one of the students. In the end, they cancelled it as the student's breath was too smelly to interview him. After then, they presented the case to the principal. We have decided, they exclaimed, "that the students is to blame. They are going to have to be responsible for their actions and should not sleep so late. They stress the teachers also." The principal nodded his head in approval.
MY VIEW: Do not change. It is fine with the same time as before. And, we still have to reach school at 7.15am with the changes. We do not go to school eariler or later

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I agree that school should start later.
First, those who are in Primary 1 could get more sleep. They just started their school and had to wake up so early in the morning, so they will not be focused during the lessons, sometimes even sleep during class time.
Second, as we grow older, we will have more workload and the lessons that we have, require us to remember quickly. Like sometimes the things of a lot of lessons are squeezed into a lesson due to shortage of time. When that happens, it is important for us to have enough sleep and we need to be focused during class time. And order to have enough sleep, we should start school later.
Third, pupils could also have more time to bond with their family. Most of the times, pupils have to rush to school in the morning without a proper breakfast. When they return form school, they might be busy doing their homework until midnight. ( if want to argue that they can bond with family during lunch and dinner time, they probably will rush through their food sometimes and some pupils' parents work until very late and they might only reach home after dinner.) If schools start later, the pupils could have a proper breakfast, where they can eat slowly and bond with their family members.
But in my opinion, school should also end at the same time because if the school ends at the same time, pupils might not have enough time to finish their homework.

ReplyDeleteTo Caleb- I believe you mean sleep earlier. Firstly,Sleeping earlier does not help. When you go to sleep, you cannot really fall asleep until the time you normally got to sleep unless you slowly adjust your biological clock. Alarm clocks don't work for me, as even if the alarm clock is right beside my ear. About feeling hungry, they will not feel hungry because if there's more time in the morning to eat a full breakfast, as compared o a rushed breakfast. So ultimately, school starting later but ending at the same time as for now is the best solution.
To xing yu- it is true, but you must also realise that many students can't pay attention in school if they wake up very early in the morning as they are too sleepy in the morning. Having more time in class does not mean more learning. It just means it is even harder to absorb information.
To Ivan-I like your story, but starting later's benefits outweigh the benefits of staring earlier or at the same time. As mentioned above, sleeping earlier does not work.

ReplyDeleteI feel that school should start later since the students will not have to worry about waking up late that much. The P1s who are new may not be able to adapt so quickly to waking up so early in the morning.
The dismissal time should remain the same since the students may not have enough time to finish their homework. This may apply to the GEP students since they generally have more homework than the mainstream pupils. They need the sleep and time to finish the work before the dateline.

ReplyDeleteI think that school should start later. This is because when most of the pupils in schools wake up, they will always be very cranky. If the waking up will be belated by a little, most pupils will be happier, and may also be more focused in class.
Being focused in class: Having better grades
Having better grades: Parents will nag less
Parents nagging less: Everyone's happier!
That will be some problems solved.
Also, if we keep the end of school at the same time, we will have more time to do homework, and so do more things we want to do, for example, play games! However, to make up for time lost, we might have to have longer school times around the exam periods. That will make sure our exam results will be able.
Primary 1 students will have more time to adjust to their new timetable as well.

Journal Writing: What are your views about School starting later in the day?
I feel that school should start later in the day. Children can sleep longer and do not have to wake up so early feeling very tired. Sometimes, we have a lot of homework so we have to burn the midnight oil. To stay up late to finish our homework means we have a shorter sleep time. Moreover, those people who catch the school bus will have to wake up even earlier to board the bus. As a result, they only have approximately 6 hours of sleep.
Especially for Primary Ones, they may not be used to waking up so early in the morning. Most students will feel not focused in class if they wake up so early; they may start to yawn during lessons and eventually will not be attentive.
In the morning about 6 o’clock to 7 o’clock, the road traffic is very heavy. Everyone is rushing to beat the Electronic Road Pricing gantry at 7.30 a.m., some of them start work at 8 o’clock and others are sending their children to school. As a result, all these will cause traffic jams and student road users will be late for school.
Sleep is very important for school children, if they have enough sleep, they will not feel grouchy, and they can pay more attention in class.
So, I agree that school should start later in the day.

ReplyDeleteI think school should start later, so students can have more time to sleep and dream. We can also have more time to have our breakfast rather than grab a bun and run situation(for some students). Further more, if we sleep more, we can pay more attention in class, especially for the pupils who take the school bus, if they live far from school, they have to wake up quite early, about 5:30am. Most of us sleep at about 10:30pm, so, we sleep for only seven hours of sleep, the recommended amount of sleep for a 11 year old is about 9 hours. So, I agree that school should start later during the day.
Extra info: Many reasearchers have found out that we have nightmares most often at midnight and have the happy dreams at dawn(4am-7am).
Andrew, 5 Gen
ReplyDeleteI believe that school should start later because pupils are suffering from the lack of sleep due to early starting times. From my personal experience, waking up at 5.30a.m. for 5 days in a row is not easy. Concentrating during lessons is tough. If school started an hour later means another hour of extra sleep. Speaking from the P1s point of view, they are in even grater need of sleep. So, if school dismissal times remain the same, then I think that school starting later is a good thing.

ReplyDeleteYo, Hi guys. Actually, there are pros and cons you know. The pros are that students have more quality time with their parents, more sleep...(and the other stuff all of you said)but... there are also cons. The cons are that pupils may not have enough time for sufficient lessons. An example is that we are rushing our syllables. Ms Ng releases us late most of the time and some other teachers do that too. So.........I'm not really on anybody's side but if you really really really really want me to choose...I would say that school should start later but only later by about 15 to 35 minutes. Hope most of u agree with me! Anyway, the case of the sleepy students by international bestseller...Ivan Toh(HeHehe) was interesting.

ReplyDeleteI think school should start earlier because when school starts earlier, school ends earlier. This way, pupils will get more time to do their homework with more time to do it.Pupils will also stay back earlier. Parents will not also have to worry about children coming home late if they are coming home by themselves or going out late to pick their children up late at night. This will also teach the students to sleep earlier.

ReplyDeleteWell, I agree that school should start later as shown in the passage as we are able spend more time with our family and have possibly a sufficient amount of time to complete homework issued on the previous day.
School starting later also means that we have more time to sleep, this, resulting in a higher level of attentiveness to be able to learn more than usual as most people get insufficient sleep and end up being sleepy or drowsy during school.
However, if school started later, but the dismissal time was same, this would be a problem as it would be putting a lot of stress on the teachers as they would have to rush to complete syllables. Therefore, I would agree to school starting later but school dismissal time should be different according to the school's later start.
WARNING: DO NOT SHAKE PRODUCT OR YOUR COMPUTER MAY BE DAMAGED. ANY IDEAS ABOUT SLEEPING ARE TALKING ABOUT SLEEPING AT HOME. SLEEPING IN THE MIDDLE OF A LESSON WILL GET YOU INTO AN EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE SITUATION, AS UNCOMFORTABLE AS TRYING TO FALL ASLEEP ON A SCHOOL DESK.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, school should start later. Studies have scientifically proved that sleep is important and crucial:
-Without sufficient sleep, many wake up grouchy and moody.
-Many are also unable to concentrate in class due to being tired and sleepy.
-Because of this, the students learn much less for half the time they are…(yawn…) yawning away. This drowsiness then spills over to when the children are doing their homework. Because of a heavy workload, many must start doing their homework in the afternoon and continue until night-time with few breaks…This causes the students to be tired while they are doing their homework…(yawn again…) and makes the quality of their work lower (not that I'm using that as an excuse).
-Sleeping enough is the MOST IMPORTANT way to boost your studies. It is the time where the strange information about quadratic algebraic equations mixed with subordinate clauses and double negatives get turned into the long-term memories at the back of your head, while your muscles and eye-power regenerate.
Ultimately, we need sleep. So there are only two things for the school to do to stop an orchestra of snores and yawns:
1. Let children go to school later (without making dismissal time later).
2. Give the students less homework (is it just me, or do I hear cheers and shouts of joy?).
So, people. Don't worry about the amount of time. Worry about the quality.

ReplyDeleteI think we should start school later so that the students can have enough sleep, so they would not be distracted easily and cannot concentrate. However there may be traffic congestions because people normally go to work at that time. I agree that school should end at the same time to give the students enough time to do thier homework. They could also rest a little and sleep earlier
Justin Chang P5 Gen
ReplyDeleteI think that it should remain the same unless you mean that it ends at the same time or ends earlier. (which is a different story)Having the school starting later mens that some pupils personal enrichment will be disrupted and studnets will have lesser time to do their homeworks. Some might already be struggling with their homeworks, it might give more pressure to them. If there is really a need for school staring later, they can make it start it during the start of a new year,so that pupils can rearranged theirenrichments.
Ernest Wissel of 5 Gen
ReplyDeleteI think school should start earlier as students would have more time to do their work which increases in load every year. starting school later would help the students to focus and have a longer attention span in class. Thus helping students learn more and score higher marks in their examinations.
I think that school should start later as students can pay more attention in class. Studies have shown that children that wake up early are less attentive/alert in class whereas children who wake up later have a better attention span. Also, children have a greater workload this year so if they are more attentive in class, they will be able to listen to important intructions.
ReplyDeleteBrandon Lim 5 Gentleness
ReplyDeleteI think that school should start later, otherwise the students will be cranky and not listen properly, meaning they would probably be scolded by teachers. Starting later also means pupils may get to eat a proper breakfast with their family, which would create more bonding time. Most students are also happier when they get more sleep(To MJ: I don't mean sleeping earlier. I just mean sleeping at the same time, waking up later). As said in the article, a little more sleep can help a lot with a child's alertness. The extra rest also lessens the amount of discipline-related problems.

ReplyDeleteI agree that school should start at a later time. Students will be grouchy if they wake up very early in the morning and cannot concentrate in class. Students will also feel very sleepy and will not have enough sleep. They may even sleep in class. If they sleep or not concentrate in class, they will not know what the teacher has been talking about and will not learn anything.
Maximus Chin 5 Faithfulness
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, I think that the school starting time should be around 7.45. The reason is that if students does not get sufficient sleep, they would be tired and sleepy and they would not concentrate or pay attention to the teacher in the class and they would not learn anything. Although i think that student should report to school later, I think that they should be dimissed at still the same time. The reason for this is that many students have to report for CCAs classes after school. After their lessons, they would feel very tired and once they reach home, they would still have to complete their homeworks and most of the time, they would have to stay up late to complete their homeworks assigned to them. Another reason is that since some boys in the school live very far away from the school, they would have to wake up at around 6.00 in the morning to have their breakfast before rushing to school, unlike those who stay near the school. Furthermore, if the starting school time is extended to 7.45, students can have more rest and they can have more time with their family members during breakfast.

ReplyDeleteI agree that school should start later. The students can get enough sleep so they would not feel too grouchy. This would also help boost the alertness level of the student in class and so they would be more focused on the tasks they are doing. The students would be able to have more bonding time with their parents in the morning as they have more time to eat breakfast with them. Many students too skip their breakfast as they simply do not have time as they would not want to be late for school. In the case of Primary 1 students, they would need to be accustomed quickly to waking up much earlier for their reporting time instead of the usual time they were used when they attended kindergarten which is much later. So, they would struggle to wake up at that time as it is hard to change their body clock.
Nicholas Tan 5Gentleness
ReplyDeleteI agree that school should start later as there may be students finding it hard to wake up earlier to be puntual for school. Since the primary 6 students will be taking their PSLE, they will be under stress and will need as much rest as they can get. Students who wake up later will not feel sleepy and will be able to pay more attention in class.

ReplyDeleteI agree that school should start later, because we get to get more sleep and we will be more alert in class.
Even though there are advantages, there are disadvantages, such as:
More sleep equals less time to do other stuff

See?
It is either more sleep or time awake.
But I still strongly agree that school should start later than usual =D

ReplyDeleteAfter all that, I want to raise a problem.
After my CCA, it will be about 4.45. Plus the 30 minutes that I need to get home; 5.15 this means that I have very little time for my homework, and what's more, I will be tired as I play table tennis.
But anyway, if school starts later, then school will end later, then we will sleep later, and wake up later, then school starts later...
its just a circle
Sorry, but now I have changed my mind, I disagree that school should start late, as that means that I will be exchanging sleeping time for homework time.

I think that school should start earlier and the dismissal time earlier too this is so that pupils would have more time to do their homework which would allow them to sleep earlier and so getting more sleep too. But if school start later and dismiss later we would have to work into the night and wake up later so whether you sleep late or not, it does not matter.

ReplyDeleteI think that the reporting time to school should remain the same because should the reporting time be later, so will the dismissal time. If the particular student has some activities after school then when he reaches home he will have very limited time to complete his work. Even if the dismissal time remains the same, then teachers will have to rush through lessons and therefore, letting students who are slower to catch up be unable to understand the particular concept.

ReplyDeleteI strongly agree that school should start later. As it is, I was sleeping at timings close to twelve. Now, in P6, the workload increased and there are more projects. I can hardly look through the stack of homework i have! Therefore, school should start later for me to have some rest. Also, the hours spent in school can be reduced so that we can do finish the homework given without losing sleep. There are some pupils who have a lot of tuition and thus having to stay up to do their homework. The MOE should hear our thoughts and have a good time thinking abut it.
